Hello,
My 1935 popped out of second gear under load or coasting. I made sure the clutch interlocks were functioning and it still popped out.
I have the tranny out. If I put it in reverse, first or third and grip the input and output shafts, I see everything inside rotate smoothly back and forth no matter what I do with either shaft.
If I put it in second and do the same thing, I see the gear (second gear I assume)migrate forward or backward on that shaft it rides on...depending on what I do to the input and output shafts. I assume this movement is my problem....or is that normal? The gear teeth all look pretty good. The input shaft does jiggle some, but it of course is not supported by that front ball bearing in the flywheel while the tranny is out.
Thanks,
John
The second and top gear are engaged by a sliding sleeve with a set of dog teeth which mesh with the internal corresponding dogs in the second and top gear accordingly. The gears themselves are constant mesh. Unfortunately the dog teeth on both the sliding sleeve and the gears wear tapered and with excess end play caused by wear of the internal thrust washers, they do not mesh closely and will cam out of gear. This is a specialist operation and will entail either fitting of new parts ,or if the teeth are not too worn re-setting of the position. I don't know who overhauls these transmissions, apart from myself, but I am in New Zealand. Parts are also hard to come by. You will need a workshop manual to guide you through the process at the very least. The internal splined shell can be re-metalled and machined, and the thrust washers built up and machined. You need a special tool to remove the splined shell. The rear thrust washer is .065" thick. Good luck.
DOUG WILDRICK OR AL SAFFARAN ARE YOUR BEST OPTIONS TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION.
