Posted on the open forum as well - do the ears on the '34-'52 8 cyl tappet covers have the six little ears sitting in the block or the cover? Have fourn d them both ways, wondered which is correct.
Geoff, there is more than one style. I think early on '34-'35, there was no inner tin baffle, just the gasket. I think they might have changed with the update use of an inside tin baffle/gasket support. That style has 3 slots at either end of the gaskets, then the later S/D style has square holes at either end of the gaskets, draft tube on only one end, but both still use the tin support plates. Hope this helps.
Thank You Doug, this is the first Step-down 8 I have had in my workshop, and it is sod of a thing to get at the tappet covers, hence I want to make sure I get it right the first time. It makes sense that the shield sits in the opening, and shields the gasket from direct oil contact and heat. I have cut two extra ears to help locate the shields in the opening so it doesn't dislodge when fitting the covers. Having said all that, it is still easier to do the tappets than on a 6 cyl Step down. On another topic, do you have a vacuum diaphragm for an 8 cyl distributor? Regards
Geoff
