I am inspecting and testing four distributors that were used on the Hudson 8. Two distributors are Auto-lite IGP 4008A models used from 1937 to 1946. The other two distributors are Auto-lite IGP 4008B models used on 1946 and 1947 Hudson 8. My Motor's Auto Repair Manual states that the maximum advance should be 17.5 degrees at 1700 distributor RPM. I am testing these on an old Sun Distributor tester. One of the IGP 4008A distributors operates right on the advance curve and hits maximum of 17 degrees at 1700 distributor RPM. The other distributors do not advance per the specs. The other IGP 4008 distributor has a maximum of 10 degrees advance at 1700 RPM. One of the IGP 4008B distributors hits maximum at 14 degrees advance at 1700 RPM. I have cleaned and inspected each of these distributors and the reason for them not achieving the design maximum advance of 17.5 degrees is not obvious to me. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be?

Bill,

Have you tried these distributors at more than 1700? If you can reach 17 degrees at a higher rpm, then I think the springs are too strong. If it does not go to a higher amount of degrees, it could be like the Hudson 8 distributor I had where the pivot holes on the weights had gotten so worn that I could not get full advance. I replaced it with a less worn distributor which advanced properly.

The Merchandisers are located in the library on this site...but they are not in order you have to find the one quoted by Roger... I have captured the part of the page in the referenced merchandiser as a picture and it is attached.
