Seeking suggestions for valve removal from my 1950 commodore 8:
Engine is out of car with head, pan and crank removed.
Valves are badly rusted in top of block and throughout guides.
Looks like only option is to destroy springs and valves while attempting to drive them out the top thru the side valve cover access chamber.
I understand the valves, guides and adjsters must be removed before the cam can come out.
Any tips for valve removal??
Keith
Sounds like you are up for some new valves at least Keith. It wouldn't hurt to replace the springs either so cut them out with an angle grinder. Then you can remove the lifters and then remove the cam. That frees up the access to drive out the rest of the valve/guides as one piece from below. Others here may have a gentler option.
I agree with Glenn, this is the best alternative in an extreme circumstance. You can get new guides, springs, and valves. Grind the springs, valves, and guides, level with the top edge of the valve chamber. This will allow removal of the clamps and lifters, and you can then remove the camshaft, and drive the remains of the guides and valves using a drift through the lifter hole, (with the block inverted, of course). You may be able to re-face the seats, but may have to fit inserts.
