Well, my mechanic finally got the clutch out to be re corked and wants to know what kind of transmission fluid to use. I did a search and the consensus for the later year models is Dexron III, but I want to make sure it is right for my 30.
Ordered Hudson Clutch Fluid for the clutch, and have the gasket material to re make the gasket.
Hopefully will be running soon.....
Thanks,
Good luck, Stuart! Hope you're back on the road soon!
As to the Dexron: sounds like you already have the correct stuff (Wildrick's?) on order, so you won't have to worry which ATF works best. Of course, it's always good to know which one to use, since you might someday need some in a pinch. I usually carry two or three bottles of Hudsonite in the trunk. Along with NOS spare parts of all types!
So, just to be clear; it's Dexron for the ATF?
No, I am not recommending Dexron, I don't know which ATF that people use.
You said Dexron III was the consensus and quite possibly it is.
I myself have always used Hudsonite, never tried ATF. I can definitely say that my clutch, after being replaced, chattered. And the Hudsonite that Doug made, seemed to help that.
Stuart, If you have ordered clutch fluid from Dr. Doug, Why do you want to know about ATF/Dexron??
If you are planning to put Dexron in your transmission don't. You will need some 80/90 wt gear oil.
Dexron to thin. My 1932 Hudson has a trans. very similar to yours. It seems "happy" with the 80/90 gear oil.

I have a real simple question from my mechanic; what kind of transmission fluid do I use?
[quote="Stuart Cohen" post=11620]I have a real simple question from my mechanic; what kind of transmission fluid do I use?
If "Transmission" = "Gearbox" then I use Penrite Transoil 140 in my '28 Essex
simple 80-90 in transmission
hudson clutch fluid in flywheel pressher plate
you need both
You're speaking now of the actual transmission (gear) oil, as opposed to clutch fluid, right? I'd tend to suggest heavier oil like the 140 W that Alistair suggested, though I suspect Penrite is a New Zealand brand. You usually cannot find this heavy oil in your standard car parts stores, but will probably find it at an oil distributor's. (Downside: he'll want to sell you a whole bunch of it!)
I find that the heavier oil provides smoother shifts in my non-synchro 1937 transmission, than the standard off the shelf gear oil which is lighter.
The Hudson guy who does my mechanical work recommended "GL-4" type140 gear oil. You have to be careful. These old transmissions had brass and bronze parts in them and if you use the wrong type of oil, it has additives that "eat up" the bronze and brass. I believe that GL-4 is not harmful, but we might have a few people weighing in on that!
