I am close to being able to pull the engine/manual tranny assembly on my 50 Commodore w/ straight 8 engine.
I have removed the stud bolts/nuts holding the tranny pad onto the cross member.
1. Does anyone know if there is a bolt going up thru the cross member and pad into the tranny?
(I can find none and the pad and tranny seem loose and have some cross-movement on the cross member. Maybe this bolt fell out or sheared off?)
2. With the tranny support cross member being welded in, it appears that the engine/tranny assembly should lift slightly and forward- out of the engine compartment.
Any tips before I get started on the lift?
Thanks in advance.
There should be a 7/16-14 capscrew going up through the bottom of the center hole in the trans mount. It's not attaching the mount to the X-member, just to the bell-housing. They're usually a pain to remove since the rubber has typically softened/swelled and closed the ID of the hole to where it's difficult to get a socket (5/8) shoved up it's you-know-what. A thin walled, deep socket will help to prevent having your short one jammed up in the hole when the extension pulls out of it.
When re-assembling, use a 7/16-14, 12-point-head capscrew to leave room for the socket. I think they're a 7/16, 12 pt.

Oh......and drain the trans/OD and replace the protruding, square head pipe plugs with socket head versions so they don't hang up on the X-member. You need all the clearance you can get.

use an engine hoist with a crank allowing you to change the angle as you pull the engine out.
If looks like trans. may drag on cross member put a hydraulic floor jack under trans. to lift it up sufficiently as you pull the engine out.
Too funny Frank ! You have done this before !!! When the plug is in the bottom of the case, it is too tall and doesn't have enough clearence between the floor pan and the cross-member. It is real tight even with the plug removed. Draining the trans the day before and leaving the plug out the whole time is recommended! Inverted hex plug used as the replacement. This is not required if the floor pan was/is removed. Clutch linkage and driveshaft have been removed, and if equipped with O/dr., be very careful that you don't break the post off the governor.
And if something seems to be keeping you from moving the assembly forward, do a THOROUGH look-around to see if you've neglected disconnecting something. Such as the speedo cable from the tranny. (Don't ask!)
Hey Park,
I am new to the club. I am getting ready to pull the engine and trans from the chassis of my 1933 Terraplane 8cylinder 2 door sedan. It is a factory eight.
It was a personal car for the owner of the Hudson garage which was 2 doors down from where I grew up. I grew up riding and playing in this car. It took me over 50 years to get it bought from the dealers family.
At sometime in the early 50's the local Hudson dealer converted the transmission from the floor shift model to a column shifted 3 speed with over drive. Since he changed the entire column, it looks good and since it was a Hudson dealer modification, I am not going to change it as I restore the car. I now have the body off from the frame and it is restored and painted; ready to be reinstalled.
I am now beginning work on the chassis. I would like to know a couple things: 1. Who can I take the engine to who will perform an entire overhaul to the highest quality, and 2. Who can fabricate a dual exhaust cast iron manifold like the one pictured. I would like to take the engine and transmission to one specialist and have both of them gone through and ready to install while I simultaneously rebuild the rest of the chassis in my shop. Finally 3, Is there anyone in the club who can coach me on upgrading the brakes to hydraulic as I hope to tour with this beautiful car when it is done. I want the car to look and be original except for the upgraded mods as I stated.
I just don't want to take the engine to a local machine shop and have them learn as they go on it, I would prefer someone who has done a few of these big straight eights and knows the engine inside out as well as the three speed od transmission etc. .
Thank you all for any of your help.
You could try Charlie Salvato in NY. He's the tech advisor for 8 cyl engine.
