I have a 50 commodore 8. I rebuilt the engine last year and it has been running well. All original, 6 volt, I have put about 600 miles on it and have the tuning about figured out. I have had two instances lately where it would not start and I was hoping for some advice.
The first time I had driven it about 10 miles, turned it off, restarted it 15 minutes later with no issue, drove 10 miles, turned it off, waited 90 minutes and then when I tried to restart it the starter would turn just fine but it sounded like there was no spark. I pulled the plug wire and there was spark. The accelerator pump was working fine and would pump gas. I towed it home, two days later it started just fine with no adjustments.
The second time I drove it 2 miles, turned it off, waited 90 minutes and then I tried to fee restart it. Same issue. I held the throttle wide open to see if it may be flooded and after 10 seconds it would try but not turn over. I push started it and drove it home. When I turned it off at home I waited 5 minutes and restarted it with no issues.
Any ideas? Thanks, Jeff
You have a carburetor problem. The anti-purculators are not venting the hot fumes and it floods the manifold. When hot do not touch the gas pedal, just turn on the ignition, hit the starter and when engine starts to turn over then just crack the gas pedal. I do a modification to correct this problem when I rebuild carbs. Walt.
Is it an issue with all of the carbs of this design or is it a issue I can fix. You mentioned a modification that you do, can you describe what it, is it a modification of the design or an adjustment?
Thanks a lot for your feedback, I was thinking flooded but having the experienced opinion will help me not waste a bunch of time chasing other things.
That is a problem with all carburetors and hot engines. I was a carburetor and ignition man in the service, world war2, and we started to work on carbs to help hot starts and finally solved the problem, now I rebuild carbs and use that fix. Sorry but it is my fix and when I go, I have a Hudson man I'm showing him the fix. Walt.
