Hello , last year I bought a 8 engine from the thirties in California and got it shipped to me here in Norway. Now I have started to dismantle it to rebuild it. It had a aluminium powerdome head on it and a extra original cylinder head to go with it. Is it someone here that can identify the differences between each year? It seems like this engine has some kind of pressurized oil lubrication system on the outside of the engine? The engine number is 13096. If that helps. And finally is it possible to buy the timing gears and if so is it in any other material than bakelite?

Can you post photos of the engine?

The fiber timing gears are readily available "new-old-stock" (Ebay is one source). Hudson did make aluminum gears available, but you must be sure to get the mating steel gear. They are scarce but still out there. In the older (late thirties) Hudsons one has to machine the web so as to avoid certain bolts on the engine.

I have a 50 model 8 cylinder but I believe the oiling is the same. The engine is a splasher, the oil pump is located on the outside of the engine driven by a gear on the cam to fill the dip trays. The pressure is low (3-12 psi) in the tubes going from the pump to both the front and rear of the engine.

Actually there is no pressure on the front line aside from the frictional resistance of pushing oil through the lines/fittings. The pressure generated in the rear line would be the same (none) except for that 3-12 psi generated by the so-called "check-valve". Its sole purpose is to cause a bit of pressure to extinguish the "Tell-Tale" light. That 3-12 psi has nothing to do with oiling system pressure.....there isn't any. It's strictly a splash-and-gravity system.
On those engines where a bypass oil filter is employed, it also facilitates a minimal flow through the filter. The filter inlet is before the valve and the return is downstream of it, just prior to being discharged into the rear dipper tray.

Raymond,

How is your engine rebuild coming along? I have a 1935 8 cylinder Hudson. I know that for 1934 and 1935 Hudson 8, the water pump is mounted on the front of the head. For 1936 and newer, it is mounted on the front of the engine.

I have a book which gives the following valve stem diameters: 1935, 5/16"; 1936-37, 3/8"; 1938-40, 11/32. Maybe this will help you find the approximate year of your engine.
