Imposing again: Put 8 qts of oil into the '53 308 w/filter change. Ran engine for circulation. The oil level on the stick is 1/4" below low mark of running range. Don't think the oil pan is larger--doesn't look modified from below {I have a lift}. So is the gage stick correct?? The distance from the stop on the stick to the bottom range mark is 9-7/8" (the level 1/4" below that). I am definitely not adding more oil until this is resolved. Unusual thing tho is that the oil level when I bought the car last week was exactly where it is now. I did not add oil since I planned to change it. Thanks in advance. Photos of bottom of stick and entire stick. EDIT: I note that a photo in the owners manual of the end of the stick does not show the 3 holes drilled in the 'Range' nor the arrows indicating lower and upper limits of 'Range'.
The new oil filter absorbs a lot of oil, and the canister holds some too. Is that the original dipstick for the car? Never have seen one with holes in it like that. If you put thicker, new oil in it, you should wait at least between 5-10 minutes for the oil to drain back in the pan after shutting the car off. Dipstick should not be bent either. Oil light go out?
These engines kind of let you know if the oil is low by making noise.
Oil level is between the 'W' in LOW and the lower mark(1/4" below the mark). I suspect the stick also, but the lettering is correct as per owners manual. Someone with a 'correct' stick could check the measurement from the stick stop to the low mark(the cross mark just before the word 'LOW'). Mine is 9-7/8". I won't operate until I know.
Good idea. If you don't get a measurement, I'll do one tomorrow as I'm sick today.
Dipstick on my '51 measures 8 5/16 from the full mark up to the underside of the "slot-holed washer" below the handle.
Tks, Park, that is the very same measurement that I have on mine. Assume that you mean the top mark as on photo above. That mark is 1-7/16" above the lower mark {which is the 'range'}. If my dipstick is correct then I would have to add almost 1-3/4" of oil to get up to the full mark at the top. That might be 2 more qts of oil that would give me almost 10 qts total that doesn't compute. Still confused. Need some others to measure their sticks !!!! I bought 3 gallons of 15W40 and now I have only one gallon left, so they went in the car???? I run that in my old cars because of the zinc. Scared to drive until I find out what is what !!
something else: my 308 has a steel sleeve in the block the dip stick goes thru that is almost 3/4" high. Is this stock?? Is the dip stick 'stop' suppose to go down to the cast iron block? But if that steel sleeve was not there it would only move my oil lever indication to 1/2" above the low range mark.

Good choice of oil.
Better measure the height of the dipstick tube above the block and factor that in. Could be changed at some time.
I did that 2 posts up ??
Very suspicious. Is that a '55 engine, or the original '53? How about a photo of the lower block, from distributor on back.
Know nothing about origin of engine. Numbers {cast} on left side of block: 304539--CWC 2 and a circle with numbers 1-8 in it with an arrow pointing to the number 4. On the head there is a number CWC 308121 Edit: the engine # stamped (vertical on upper rt. side) is 259984.

Richard, the engine number is just ahead of the front end of the exhaust manifold. Here are pic's of that area and the dipstick area on my original-engine '51.
