The radio in my 1951 Hornet works fine except I can't set any of the pre-set buttons. I tried pulling them out, but they won't budge. Any suggestions?
I'm not acquainted with the Step-Down radios but as you may know, various owners and shop manuals are available for download here at the H-E-T website. I found a 1950 owner's manual there, and here's how it describes pre-setting the buttons:
1. Loosen the first push button by turning it counter clockwise with your fingers.
2. Turn the manual tuning control knob (4) to tune in the desired station. Carefully tune to the middle of the signal for clearest reception.
3. Push the first push button in as far as it will go. Release the button, and tighten securely by turning it clockwise with the fingers.
4. Repeat the above procedure for the remaining five push buttons.
Unscrew the desired button a little bit (1/2 turn or so counterclockwise), get on the desired station with the tuning knob, press the button in, then tighten the button. Voila!
Thank you. The procedure worked perfectly.
Do the Radio preset buttons work the same way on the 54 Hudson's?
I would think so, Brownie ... it was pretty much the standard way at the time.
The radios used in the 53-54 Hudsons with the rectanguler buttons are set
by tuneing the station and then pulling the button partially out. Next push button all the way in. Station is now set.
These instructions are contained in your owner manual.
"Ric"
You must pull the bottom all the way out before pushing it back in. There's a recess in the underside of each button to assist with grip but they're still a bit uncooperative sometimes. Ours was seized and the "OFF" button wouldn't pop out as it should whenever a preset button is pushed so we had to dis-assemble the tuner and spruce it up. Works great now.
