I am looking for a paint formulation for original color Maroon-Deep (code M) for my 49 Super Six or a close match to a modern auto color. Also curious if this should be a metallic or solid color as originally shipped from the factory. Some color charts call out the color as "metallic" and others as "poly." While I know what "metallic" means, I'm not sure what "poly" would imply back in 1949. Thanks for any help you can provide!...Gary
"Poly" would be metallic also.
Hi Larry...thank you for the clarification on the term "poly." Do you have any further information on paint codes or formulations that match maroon-deep?
I don't have any cross-over to modern paints or formulas for it. There were 2 or 3 similar colors of maroon/dk. red colors available. Is the paint code visible?
I have been unable to find the original paint code that should be stamped on the door hinge. The exterior of the car was repainted many years ago in a pinkish-red and sat in an open field for many years. I am mostly going by the original color that remains on the firewall which by my paint chip samples is Maroon-Deep. It is darker than the Ruby Red which I believe was only used as a bottom color for two-tone combinations. I like the look of the Maroon-Deep so I am trying to replicate that as close to factory color as possible. By this post, I am hoping that someone has already done some of this color research and is satisfied with the result. I truly appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post!
My dad had a '49 Super 6 which was Deep Maroon (pictured). I've had a couple '49s myself.
Hi Larry...That is an awesome picture! Thanks for sending that. If it was a sedan, it would be just like mine. Thanks again!
Here is an update on my paint research. I took the cowl vent from my car to my local paint supplier who scanned the underside which had some original paint that I believe to be Maroon-Deep. His scan came up with a close match for paint code 903 Velvet Red for a 2002 Mini. I sprayed out a sample which looks pretty close to the paint chip I have but has a little too much metallic and it has a bit of a "brownish" tint. Through other investigation, I found the Ford Royal Maroon 3059 (or Lincoln Royal Burgundy) is pretty close but it is not a metallic. Any opinions?
I would check to see if you have a PPG paint supplier near by. Take the cowel vent to them to come up with a match they can create from scratch. Afterwards, get a copy of the new paint formula so it can be published.
Hi Kerry...thanks for your reply. That is exactly what I did but with an Axalta (i.e. Nason, Metalux) supplier. It was their scan that came up with the match to the Mini paint code. Are you thinking the PPG supplier may come up with something different?
Gary, it sounds to me like they are trying to find the nearest matching existing formula.
My local PPG supplier has made up from scratch, several formulas for me based off of painted parts scan.
I scanned the formula copies and sent them to Ken Cates to put on his Hudson web site. This helps others with an
existing formula. I have not had one made up with the 49 marroon.
Kerry...I think you are correct. I was originally unaware of how they did the scans but I agree, it would be best if they can come up with an original formulation rather than a match. I'll see if someone can do another scan for an original formula. Thanks.
