Hi, I'm trying to adjust the steering box on my '47 coupe. The repair manual instructs you to remove the lock nut (D) and the plate (E), then turn an adjusting screw.
The sketches in the book don't seem to match my car which seems to have a nut surrounding an unslotted bolt.. See photo.
Should I remove the lock nut and expect to find an adjusting screw? Is this a Hudson steering box from a different year? Or is in a non-Hudson box?
Thanks, Chuck Davis 717-624-8233 octoberhillfarm@me.com
Thanks to everyone who responded. I did manage to properly adjust the steering. Chuck Davis
Chuck, I think your picture is looking at the steering box from inside the engine bay. You access the adjustment from the outside, in wheel well.
Peter, I appreciate your comment but I assure you the photo was taken from the wheel well looking through the frame.
No further comments are solicited. Thanks, Chuck
Chuck, mine is a 1953. I thought the steering boxes were the same, but apparently not. Good luck.
Hudson was notorious for using old images from previous mechanical procedure manuals in later versions. My '46 Coupe and Convertible have the same steering box as yours. If you look at the 1946 Parts manual, page 79, you'll see your steering gear box. And yes, if you remove the locking nut, it will expose the slotted sector adjusting screw.
Hi Todd, Thanks for the insight. I did figure everything out and managed to adjust the steering.
