I have seen old posts about a 3rd check ball being added to the 968s and 2113s Twin -H  WA-1 carbs idle circuit to smooth out idle. I have just rebuilt 3 968s and 1 2113s and have found just 2 check balls in each, also nothing in the Hudson shop manual about this 3rd check ball. Anyone have other knowledge of this or if it really makes much of a difference? Just odd that all those I've looked at lack the additional check ball.

Thanks

Ron, don't know where you obtained that info, but I have no idea of what a check ball would have to do with a smooth idle??. The odds are you do not have the carbs balanced correctly, and/or the engine and trans mounts could be worn out??. When adjusting the carbs, you have to disconnect one side or the other of the linkage coming across the cyl. head. Just remove the cotter pin and pin from the linkage so that the spring still pulls the rod back to idle. Then adjust the idle and then the air/fuel mixture screws.  Also make sure there are no vacuum leaks in the manifold and/or the vacuum advance for the distributor.  Hope this helps, Doug

I have rebuilt dozens of WA-1's and call tell you there are only two check balls in the accelerator pump circuit, one for inlet, and other for discharge. What can affect idle quality is a mis-adjusted saxophone key type anti-percolator valve.......if it does not crack open slightly as intended at closed throttle during hot idle, vapor pressure in the float bowl can build up and force fuel into the main jet, causing the idle to be lumpy.

I have yet to mount the carburetors, I'm currently rebuilding a 308  with twin-h. I was just searching the open forum trying to find if there was any difference between the 986s and 2113s and came across this:

Thank you all for your helpful input.

The only difference between the 968S and 2113S is the metering rods on the 2113S being a tad leaner than the 968s, due to the 54, 55-& 56 308 blocks having the factory 7x relief that improved the breathing of the engine compared to the 1951-53 blocks. You are obsessing too much over that guy's post about the check valve in the low speed jet. THERE SHOULD BE NO check ball under the low speed jet. Someone had put those balls in there by error. There SHOULD be a check-ball under the plug in the discharge side of the accelerator pump circuit. I have rebuild dozens of these WA-1's, of both the 968S and 2113S variety, along with the 2114S  and 2009S varieties used on the Hudson Jet.
