I meant to ask this before I replaced the tank in my '50 C6, but completely forgot until this morning when I saw the items in question still under the car.
Those items being a half dozen squishy foam-like pads that were on top of the old rusted tank. Did the factory install those? Are there supposed to be any type of isolators for the tank straps? There weren't any when I removed the old tank, but I made some out of old inner tubes. My concern is that rubber anywhere may be an invite to rust. What does the brain trust say?
As always, thanks much.
The original material between the tank top and the trunk floor was an insulator/ noise reduction item. It was made of a tar impregnated material with multiple layers. The material is much like roofing paper layers. If your material is unusable you can cut strips of roofing paper and make a layered insulator that is about 4 -6 layers thick to replicate the original.
Good info. I assume then that the foam-like pads were added later. I reinstalled the tank without anything there. have not driven it, so if a rattle manifests, I'll know how to deal with it. Thanks.
Darren, we have these in stock. It is a special foam piece that should be installed around the filler neck before installing the fuel tank. You can still install it afterwards, but you will need to cut it and then super glue it back. We've done this many times. It is designed to stop excessive road draft, exhaust and all the other elements that can sneak thru the opening. There is also supposed to be 3 curved straps. These are there to secure/compress the foam gasket to the body, thus sealing around the filler neck tightly. Also, don't forget to install a new ,3/8th's piece of rubber fuel hose on the vent tubes, bery important. Hope this helps, Doug
You definitely need the filler neck foam seal and those three metal strips. Not only does it keep out dirt and drafts, but it also keeps out mice, who otherwise will crawl up inside the trunk and piss all over and crap and chew on things in there. BTDT.
Doug, can you tell me what those parts are called, or give me a part number? Just got a bunch of stuff from you. Nice.
I was originally referring to some foam like material I removed from the top of the old tank. I wanted to know if it belonged there or if some prior owner stuffed it in there later. Does the tank mount right against the trunk floor, or is there an insulator of some sort? Anything between the tank straps and the tank?
I didn't see anything on your site besides the teardrop shaped foam piece?
