Went to install a priming pump (aerotek 6v. pos ground). I have it on a push button. It could be heard running, bit was not pumping. I disconnected the line to the (brand new) tank and got a flow going to the pump.
After that, the pump would not work. I hooked it to 12 from a spare battery and it pumped well all the way to the dront of the car, so I know my line is clear. Still will not run on 6v. With the switch.
Checked my power and 10a fuse. Both good. Ohm the switch, also good.
My ground is a self tapping screw run directly to the frame rail.
Anybody have an idea on what I might have wrong or what I should check?
As always, thanks for the help.
Check the side of the pump and see if it is stamped 6V. Maybe you got a 12 volt pump in a 6volt box.
If it's a 12V pump, that's a sign--keep it and convert to 12 volts! 😉
Like said, it was running on 6v originally, then would not after it got a prime, but did when connected to 12v. I am thinking about running the ground wire all the way to the battery to verify a ground problem. I was wondering if any of you have had a similar situation. Could the 12v have enough "push" to arc through a weak ground?
Peter, I did consider a 12v conversion, but can't really justify it as the car is going back to stock (except for the pump, which is set up to just prime the system). If I need all the modern conveniences, I have a 1980 Jeep on standby. 🙂
Darren, I know you considered a 12V conversion from another thread on the topic, and I was just poking you about it again. 🙂
Anyway, if you take the ground back to the battery and it works, then check the ground strap from the engine to the frame to make sure the connections are CLEAN and tight. After 70 years, some corrosion and poor connection is likely.

The diaphragm in those pumps are prone to tears. Operating on 12 volts a pump with a small tear may not pump on 6 volts but pump on 12 volts. Reason : pumping plunger operates at 2x the 6 volt speed when connected to 12 volts. This may allow the pump to push some fuel in spite of a bad diaphragm. The pulse type pumps have problems with the ethanol gas. I have a box of them that have gone bad. The small rotary pumps that look like an inline filter work fine with the bad gas. I bought another pulse type on eBay recently that said it was a Carter. It worked when I installed it. The next day after setting overnight it didn’t pump. When I took it off I noticed it was silver and the other Carters in the junk box were gold. The silver pump had no Carter markings and was made in Chine. I installed a small rotary pump and no more problems.
