Yes, I know, it’s black, but I need to know what finish. Someone hit the inner fenders on my 1953 Hornet with a spray can of what looks like satin black, but underneath it looks like the original was semigloss.  I have removed the inner fenders to install new inner fender skirts, and I have sanded and prepared the inner fenders for painting.

Was the original finish semigloss, satin, or a more matte finish?

I’m not trying to do a concours-correct job, just make it close enough to what was originally there.

Peter, there are factory photo's that show these panels running into a dipping trough. I have had numerous O.E. Hudson cars, and from my experience, I think these panels were somewhat shiny, but were a semi-gloss finish. If you start polishing on the original paint, it will start to shine. Hope this helps.

Doug, thanks for the quick reply. I’ll just go with black semigloss out of a spray can.  Close enough for and olde Hudson.

SUGGESTION: I love the Dupli-Color Engine Enamel Paint Semi-Gloss Ceramic Black
It is one more TOUGH paint. Use several thin coats so it won't run.
ALSO, Dupli-Color is better than Rustoleum because you can fit the finger pull sprayer to those cans, but CANNOT on the Rustoleum cans. Makes spraying panels much easier and smoother. Be sure to get that !
EDIT: Goodness, I just checked the price of both paints and they have gone up about $4. per can since last Fall. Oh well, where this stops is anyone's guess !!!!!!!!!!!!

Richard, thanks for the recommendation. I had a can of Krylon semi gloss black in my collection, so that’s what I used. When I need to buy more, I’ll look at the Duplicolor stuff.

Another tip: when you get ready to spray the bottom of the car & ALL the stuff there; get Walmart Colorplace aerosol cans. They are $1.98 now. But were $1.49 four months ago and $0.98 a year ago; SERIOUSLY !!!
They have gloss black and flat black. The flat black is NOT pretty satin but gloss is nice !! Lot better than paying $10.+ And finger sprayer attachment works on these cans.

I have found that at Chimart (aka Walmart), you almost always get what you pay for—the very cheapest and lowest quality.

That especially goes for the crap paint they sell. in my experience, it’s thin, runs easily, doesn’t cover well, and doesn’t adhere well.  I don’t want to have to go through the trouble of removing, preparing, and repainting these things in a couple years.  My time is more valuable than a few dollars.

Richard, don’t take it personally. I have had lousy results from Walmart stuff, unless it’s a known brand. Even their brands of over-the-counter drugs, nutritional supplements, and personal care items are largely made in China. My wife bought a bottle of vitamins in Walmart’s “Equate” brand, and I looked at the label, and it said, product of China.  So I threw it away. I’m not putting anything in my body that’s made in China.

If you’re not aware, there have been several high-profile reports of contaminants like lead, melamine, industrial solvents, and other toxins in Chinese processed foods, drugs, pet food, baby formula, etc. search back issues of the Wall Street Journal for the reports.  I’ve dealt with quality control problems from Chinese sources in other parts of my professional life, and I won’t burden everyone here with that litany, but I will say that you have to be very careful of quality control with almost anything made in China.

The POR-15 you brushed on the bottom of your car ain’t made in China!
