Greetings ---I'm considering installing headers and dual exhaust on my '54 Hollywood Super Wasp with Twin H (it's 262ci with a 232 iron head). I'm looking for advice on how/where to run the dual exhausts and what size exhaust pipes and mufflers to use. Are two full length exhausts from each header pipe practical or is there an alternative method for running the exhaust out the back of the car without resorting to cutting up the body/frame?
Pictures of installs would be really helpful if available.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Robert
I decided not to wait for this subject post to end up in the "No Replies" trash bin like so many others do.
So did some research and found this You Tube Video from a couple of years ago: https://youtu.be/_baos9K5p6Y
Very neat car and video answers most of my questions. Thank you me!
Hey, that's my video and car. If you want more useful or specific pictures I would be happy to send them your way. I wouldn't recommend routing your exhaust exactly the wat shown here around the rear leaf spring and spare tire well. Since this video I had some clearance issues and had the whole back end redone. It's much better now.
Adam, can you show us some pictures of th e re-route?
Thanks!!
Adam ---Pictures would be fantastic! Also pipe sizes and muffler(s) part numbers if you have them. Thank you!!
(ps ---Your YouTube Channel is excellent)
You bet, will try to get those to you all tonight.
I need to upload more; been a long time since I put something on there 🙂
What type of headers are you using?
Didn't get a chance to get the car up on the lift tonight to take good pictures. Promise I'll get them to you all soon. In the meantime, I can tell you I have Clifford headers going into two 2.25" stainless exhaust pipes. These both connect to a single Magnaflow 11385 dual X-pipe muffler. I really like my Clifford headers although it's hard to keep powder coat on them. One day I may remake them in stainless steel. The Magnaflow is the best decision I ever made. The X-pipe provides better flow but the sound is incredible. Slightly more hot-rod sounding than stock but not so obnoxious that you can't enjoy a conversation inside.
If the exhaust tone still sounds anything like the original in the video—-I’m there! Thanks for the model number and pipe diameters. I’m also going to install Clifford’s…
It gets very tight running two pipes out the back. You can do it, keep the pipe size as small as possible. If stock ride height is being used, pipes can be run under cross member that stock exhaust travels through. Gets tight out back going around the pan hard bar. A few mandrel bent pieces makes this part easy. The gas tank filler neck is also in the way. In the end, it is just a custom exhaust system with a few more bends.
Xander ——The ‘54 Super Wasp’s ride height is stock. I’d prefer both pipes exiting under the passenger’s side rear bumper (side by side) if that’s possible without surgery.
I’m also working on a highly modified ‘54 Hornet Coupe which will have dual exhausts on both ends of the rear bumper (similar to your black ‘49—still have that car?). On the Hornet I’m moving the gas tank over towards the passenger side after cutting out the wheel well to make room for a dual 3” pipes (has a 454 ci in it today but a 540 ci is the final plan).
Thanks for your patience. Here's a picture archive of what I thought were the important shots. They're pretty large so I uploaded them to online storage. If there are other angles or shots you need that I didn't get, just let me know and I'll try to grab them. Sorry there aren't any wide-angle shots, the lift is being used right now and I had to use my ramps.

I sold the black 49, picked up another Hudson truck.

Adam ---Thanks for effort and time to jack up the car and take the shots! These provide more than enough information to jump start my install. (Richard Dryman also provided pictures of his install making me extra happy I asked for input...)
By the way, is the black football shaped rubber object next to the headers a hand vacuum prime for the fuel pump? Wild guess...
