What's the best way to install the front crank spacer on my 50 Pacemaker 232? Should it fit against the crank gear?
Dave, you've placed your technical inquiry in the "Club and Forum Suggestions" category. This category is for comments on Club business, or on the operation of the Hudson Forum. Unfortunately, your question won't attract many replies, since most people don't tune in to this section of the Forum.
I have moved your post to the "Hudson" category where (we hope) it will attract more viewers.
It goes on after the gear. It should be a slip fit. No need to force it on in any way. It should fit right up against the gear.
I'm to fix an oil leak. New seal, new spacer and it still leaks after no miles. I thought perhaps I'd pushed it on too far as the edge of the spacer is right at the edge of the seal. Any ideas?
Did you install the crank seal flush with the face of the timing cover? I noticed when I rebuilt my 232 that if I installed the seal that way, all the way flush against the cover, it would ride too far forward and the seal would be riding against the beveled lip of the spacer, which I didn't trust. So I gave the inside of the timing cover a skim coat of RTV, installed the seal so it sat short of flush, then wiped off the remaining RTV that would be on the engine side of the seal. My seal still rides close to the front of the spacer but did not leak.
Yes I did install the seal flush with the cover and I noticed the same issue although I didn't consider altering the seal position . I thought that was the way it was supposed to be. I found a National seal 450084 that's 1/2 wide instead of .313 as the original replacement. I will either try that one or your suggestion as the lip being too close to the bevel on the spacer, I believe, is the problem. Thanks for the info!
You can install the spacer with the bevel inward. Just put a few screws in the cover, Lube the beveled end of the spacer, and push it on the crank to center the cover before you tighten the cover down.
