I got a message asking if I would post pics…well of course!
Anyone know where I can get the materials to replace the fabric roof insert? Once I get that part fixed, I want to replace the window seals, and remove door panels and clean/lubricate the rails etc to make rolling windows up and down easier.
anyone have any advice or know of anyone around Louisiana or SETX that could help with the roof insert? I wanna do my best to keep things right and correct. I’m only 33 and wanna see my kids be able to enjoy it one day!

Oh forgot to ask, what does everyone use for adhesive to keep running board mats in place?
Beautiful. Wildrick restoration in Indiana has all the rubber seals u need. In the roster.
Thanks I saw the stuff he has listed, but I think first thing is first getting the exterior roof fabric insert done.
The headlight buckets are they chrome or nickel plated? I’m sure chrome but they are faded and dull, but I was thinking of just trying to clean them up a bit and wax them until one day I get them redone in the future. I got a couple days off this week was thinking about just cleaning everything really well. Ive got experience polishing guns for bluing, doing nickel and brass polishing with my Edison Phonographs. Flitz is great for small and thinly plated items. Ballistol works wonders on things as well. I’m excited for this adventure if you can’t tell!
Jacob, have clamps ready and use a tube of urethane. I love that car, so Original !
Haha thanks Doug!! Y’all did an amazing job!! I ordered the top fabric from Restoration Specialties I think it was, gonna grab some padding/cotton tomorrow in town on my off day. I noticed in the Maint Manual it said finish off with “finish binding”. I can’t find anything online that points me in the right direction on what would be a good original look. I’ve never seen another Hudson so I’m not sure what it should look like. I haven’t been able to really look at what’s under the tape yet…but I am getting it all off and prepped tomorrow! Any advice on what to use for “finish binding”?
I had also recommended Restoration supply company in Escondido, CA. I know you probably don't know what "hide-em" is, but I thought they had something very similar. if not the exact right stuff to finalize the outside edge when doing the insert replacement. Maybe someone on here can help with what they have found that works and has the correct appearence.
Something else to add about the running boards. Make sure the edges are all real clean, no dirt and/or debris under the edges. If I remember, it was like that when we restored it mechanically.
Thanks again Doug! I really appreciate it! I saw they both had a “wire vinyl hidem” but wasn’t familiar with that just the normal hidem, so I decided to wait and see what I could find out.
Yeah the running board mats are not secured on the edges, and the passenger side gluing failed on the first half, but today I got some of the same sealant I was gonna use on top and use on there; clean everything real well and put back. However not gonna use a whole lot just a dab here or there to hold it cause eventually ima install new rubber and don’t wanna fight scraping off the sealant lol I believe future self would hate past self at that point! Oh and I keep getting those two companies confused…it was actually restoration supply or restoration stuff.com I got the vinyl from! I was able to find the cotton batting and Muslin fabric locally…so now all I have to do is wait until the vinyl gets here and figure out what the “finish binding” is according to section 20 page 5 of the maintenance manual.
This is copied and pasted here from Open forum so I can keep this thread updated as well. May make another thread:
I hope I didn’t bite off more than I can chew. I’ll admit when I got that tarp off I felt a little overwhelmed never having done this before. Fortunately goo-gone helped with not removing more of the paint from the tape. I’ll see if I can get the roof sanded and painted back to look like the rest if possible after roof done cause the primer is very very good underneath. Maybe I can find someone that can lightly sand and get the peeling paint back a bit then just shoot those spots.
Anyways, here is some pics of what I found. I find it scary but also fascinating lol. So you can see the different original layers which is cool. Bottom Muslin fabric, then a cotton padding, then what looks like another muslin fabric then the black “canvas” roof material. Boy is vinyl gonna be an upgrade! If anyone knows someone around SWLA or SETX that could come assist and give advice, I wouldn’t mind paying their way and paying for their time…and their beer! Lol I’m just afraid ima mess something up. Can’t really afford to make a big mistake lol
One other thing, how can I keep humidity down in a shop? I have a 30x40 shop, with 2 roll up doors in the front and 1 in back, and I just feel like ima have humidity rusting issues with this stupid Louisiana weather. For instance my oil tell-tell has always worked, today, it worked then went out before I even started it lol But boy did Doug at Wildrick do a good job putting thing thing together cause it’s been sitting 6 days and got down to 26, today is in 40s…got in…and it fired right up [img]
[/img] . I do need to figure out how to keep my leaf springs from getting surface rust between each leaf, the antifreeze that got on it the other day is making it nasty. The pretty black paint has orange in between. I wiped it down and sprayed with some oil hoping to repel.
OH and i ran it for prolly 5 min, and no antifreeze out the water pump…so I guess it was just the fact it had too much and no where to go. Will have to see once I can drive it again.

Few more:

Jacob, before you get too carried away, go buy some surface prep. There are several different brands, I think NAPAS name brand is Kleez-EZ. It will remove the tape adhesive and not the finish. After you have it cleaned , you will be able to see the groove that originally had the rubber inserted into it. Once the top material was installed, tacked and sealed, the rubber gets installed into the groove for the final transition to the body. Hope this info helps you, as to the more information you get here, the less likely to make you confused and/or afraid to continue, you got this!
Doug thank you for all the advice i really appreciate it! I tried Goo-Gone today and wasnt too impressed, it smelled of gas with a hint of orange lol, and while it did soften the glue a little bit it made it a rubbery, slippery mess. I put some on a rag and just dabbed it a bit and it worked well enough to get the tarp off, but ill definitely check that out tomorrow morning after i get off work.
I know i had talked to you via email about the water pump stuff. I started it today and ran it a while and looks to have no leaks out of the pump! now i only ran it for 5 min, so it didnt get too warm, but i saw a bunch of antifreeze underneath it looked as if in the freezing temps the other day it expanded and i guess the last little bit came out the overflow. i got a little left to suck out and i think itll be good!
I checked the running boards like you said, and sure enough on the drivers side theres a lot of rock chips etc and looks to be some surface rust from that happening. Ima try to wipe it all down really well and see if i can get some kinda of rust prevention and coat that area and then spray it back black; maybe thatll get me by a while.
I contacted a guy about fixing the roof paint, and sent him a bunch of pictures. He said he could do it no problem and may be able to fix some other areas while hes at it, but hes sick right now but will come by and give me a price when he can see it in person. Hopefully its not too much...maybe i can do some trading
I’ve been posting more on the open forum as it seems to get more traffic, but I figured I’d ask here, anyone know how to remove the rear seat in a 34’ Deluxe? I don’t wanna pull on something and break something I’ll regret lol need to put seatbelts in for the kiddos
Jacob, push in and lift upwards.
