My 48 Super Six uses a little oil but does not smoke at all. My compression is 100 to 108 across the board. I get a pretty good stain on the garage floor after some highway driving and I think its coming from the vent tube. Is this an indicator of worn valve guides? Can I use valve seals from a chevy maybe? Any input would be helpful.

Hi Kerry - these are good articles. I once had a 50 Ford P/U with a 289 in it. It smoked a lot so I ran a piece of flexible electrical conduit from the breather into the snorkel of the air cleaner! Worked great on a worn out motor! I guess the real issue here is that I should be looking for an internal problem. I had the motor apart 5000 miles ago. Got a sleeve put in a cylinder. Otherwise all stock 262. It's clean inside. As I said the compression is pretty good but I guess there is a possibility of cracked rings or something. I get just a smidge of pre-ignition at high speed acceleration, that I can't quite get out. I guess for now, the catch can system would be good to use.
You've got me thinking now.....
Thanks for your helpful suggestions!
