Can someone please post a few photos of the original jack storage in a 48/49 stepdown? I picked up a bumper jack for mine - don't know where it goes! Thanks!

Mike, I don't own a '48-49 but in my mind's eye I see the jack placed along the side of the spare tire in the storage wheel well with the other end jutting upwards and resting within in a receiver bracket with a square opening. This receiver bracket is welded below the rear window frame. But truth be told I might be confusing this synapse memory with a '51 Studebaker.

Hi Robert and thank you for your reply. I don't have a spare tire well in the 48. It just lays flat on the trunk floor and is mounted there. I don't see any brackets in the trunk for holding a jack but my new jack has a couple of galvanized brackets that I might be able to use. I must admit - it's got me scratching my head! Ha, ha!

Mike, Now that's why I routinely mistrust my memory! There's not even a wheel well,,,Maybe the jack is somehow strapped onto the top plate of the spare?

I had a very original 48 and when I got the car the jack was stored under the spare toward the front of the car up against that step - up. The flat base for it was shoved under the tire and the tire clamped down. I have been told there was a tool bag came with the car made of burlap that contained the flat plate for the bumper jack and pliers and screwdriver. By the way your memory is not entirely wrong the later Stepdown cars used a wheel  well in the right side of trunk floor ,not sur but maybe  1951 and up.

Thank you Roger, this is a big help. If there was a tool kit, it's long-gone now! I will pull the spare out tomorrow and see if I can figure things out. I really appreciate your input.

I am reopening this topic from over 3 years ago with some follow up questions.

First, the jack in the pictures was in the trunk of my 1949 Super Six sedan (with a lot of other parts) when I bought it many years ago.  It is about 30-1/2" tall and the ratchet assembly is stamped with RH-INC.  I have also included a page from the owner's manual with a jack illustration.  Can anyone verify if this is an authentic Hudson issued jack?

Second, the original owner manual also mentions a tool kit that includes "a wheel hub bolt wrench (which is also used as a jack handle), pliers, screw driver, and a ratchet-type jack and base."  Does anyone have a picture of this original tool kit or know anything about its design?

Third, the original forum poster asked about jack storage in the trunk.  That was not really answered with confidence.  Does anyone have any information on how the jack (or tool kit) was mounted in the trunk?

I appreciate any help you can provide.
