Performed a compression test on my 1948 Commodore 8 sedan today and the results were as follows, starting with the cylinder closest to the radiator...71, 76, 75, 82, 90, 85, 90, 57...Anyone have any input on what the readings SHOULD be?...
There's a 1948-1949 shop manual in the online library.
The manual (page 2-3, Engine Tune-up (Compression Test) says [ 3. The minimum compression readings should not be less than 100 pounds and variation between cylinders not over 10 pounds.
Check out the manual at http://hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm

This is not good news for Michael! Don't get discouraged! Please Keep us informed on resolution and with pictures.

Was the test done with the engine at normal running temperature? If so, it could indicate leaking valves, or worn rings. Normal readings should be around 95-100, and not varying more than 5 lbs between cylinders. Test should be done with throttle held wide open, coil disconnected, and plugs removed.
