does anyone know of a rotary type 12 volt electric fuel pump that is quiet? I have one of the small Airtex rotary pumps that is so loud I even tried mounting it with rubber and it sounds like an air chisel.
Carter has one, I've bought a couple thru Summit Racing.
I'm using the Carter ones from Summit Racing on three of my Hudsons, all mounted with the supplied rubber isolators. They make noise, but I can't hear them when the engine is running.
Thanks guys for the reply. Summit Racing has a lot of carter electric pumps, do you remember which model you used?
I am using the P4594.Carter
Why are you switching to an electric fuel pump? The mechanical one works well, delivers more than enough fuel at the right pressure, and doesn’t need electricity and wires. I’ve done this on several old cars (Studes), and ended up going back to the mechanical pump.
If you use a rotary pump, you will also need a fuel pressure regulator tha can drop the pressure to 5 psi or so. Almost all the rotary pumps are designed for high pressure for fuel injection systems, and they run continuously. And they suck up a fair amount of current to do that.
Again, why do you want an electric pump?
The one I'm using is 5-8 PSI, I believe. I've been using them since the early 90's without Issue. I replaced one of them about two years ago. I think that 17-18 years is a pretty good run.
But why do you want to use an electric fuel pump? What problem does it fix?
On my '40 with the Hornet engine, the original six cylinder engine mount bracket on the frame occupies the same real estate as the pump. The 36 and the 41 are modified, and I like electric pumps. The float bowl fills up without cranking the engine over if the car sits for an extended time. It is a theft deterrent. I can pull a fuse, and no one can drive away with my car.
Thanks. If you have fit problems then an electric pump makes sense.
As for filling the float bowl if it’s been sitting, well, the solution to that problem is to drive it more frequently!
Carter Universal Rotary Vane Electric Fuel Pumps P4594
5 to 9 psi rating. I still install a fuel pressure regulator. I've used these on several studebakers with no issues.
Almost instant start up after setting.
Thanks for all of the replies. My question was about noise, not the benefits or drawbacks of an electric pump. I have electric pumps on others cars. And cars with both pumps installed. Both 6 and 12 volt electric pumps are available with various pressure out puts. My 46 8cyl. Came with an electric pump and bad wiring. When I converted it to 12 volts I had to change the pump. The noise on this one is just to loud. I’m going to switch to the Carter P4594. Thank you everyone that answered.
I use a Holley fuel pump on my '53. Can barely hear it. Just use for priming. Once it pressurizes everything it will just 'tick' ever now and then.
Yeah, if my car has been sitting for a week or more, it takes a fair bit of cranking to get the fuel from the mechanical pump to the carbs. An electric pump would eliminate some wear and tear on the starter.
I installed a new carter pump and it is nice an quiet now.
