I would appreciate help with 4 questions. I am working on the clutch and gearbox on a 1948 super six with single lever gearbox and OD.
1. I found the flywheel was attached with the nuts and spring washers as shown in the photograph. The nuts are NOT self locking but have the hex part reduced to a circle where they were in contact with the spring washer. Can someone confirm if this nut and spring washer combination is correct please. I just don't like using this type of spring washer on the flywheel in case they set up a stress concentartion that might lead to a crack. Should there have a been a locking plate like on the hyramatic flywheel, or was there something else ?
2. I am replacing the worn out engine, with one that was originally fitted to a hydramatic car. Can I safely leave the hydramatic spigot bush in the end of the crank, and just use a manual type ball spigot bearing in the flywheel? It does not look as if the gearbox main shaft will come into the contact with the hydramatic type of bush.
3. The gearbox and overdrive box were operating well, but leaked oil from gaskets and seals. I am considering dismantling and replacing the seals and gaskets myself. I have the appropriate manuals. Is there anything to look out for on this gearbox that could catch me out?
4. The car came with a new gearbox mounting as a spare. When I removed the gearbox, I found it was floating, as there were no bolts attaching the mounting to the cross member. Are these standard bolts? I seem to recall a mention somewhere that there was something special about them ?
I live in the UK, so local expertise is a little thin on the ground. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
1. That hardware is correct.
2. You can leave the pilot bushing in the crank.
3 .I have no practical experience here.
4. Yes standard hardware, nothing special.
The two bolts that enter through two holes in bottom of the cross member under the bell housing and hold the transmission mount to the cross member were about 2-3 inches long and went through spacer sleeves. I will look to see if I have these out of the 54 Hornet with standard tranny.
Thank you Dany.
Thank you Ken.
