I have just removed the single lever (with overdrive) gearbox from my 48 Super 6 coupe.
1. There is a lot of play in the clutch cross shaft so I need to remove it and make a repair. It appears that the clutch fork is retained by 2 tapered pins, however there is no access to the back of the pins to drive them out. So I have a number of questions please.
-Can someone advise the correct procedure to remove the pins, will they need to be drilled out?
-Are there bushes in the bell housing, if so does anyone manfacture them?
-What is the correct specification for new tapered pins ? I am in the UK and this sort of imperial hardware is difficult to find, so I may need to import from the US. Is there a recommended supplier?
Regarding the gearbox, there is an oil leak between the gearbox and overdrive casing and the spacer. Should there be a paper gasket fitted ?
Thank you for any advice concerning making the repairs.
I managed to remove the paddle and then this allowed me to flip the clutch fork over to gain access to the rear of the pins. To my surprise they came out relatively easily with a hammer and a punch. The shaft is worn so I will need to get it built up with weld and turned or ground back to size. I am going to need new bushes. Does anyone know where to obtain them please ? Thank you.
I just went to a bearing shop and obtained bushings the correct o/d and machined them to fit.
Thanks Geoff. Do you happen to know if there would originally have been paper gaskets between he gearbox casing and the overdrive casing and the spacer please?
Regards,
Brian.
Yes, a very thin paper gasket. Preferably use a good sealant like Loctite flange sealant, which sets when air is excluded, but does not harden.
