I am interested in converting my manual steering to power steering and would appreciate any info I can get.
My first car was a 52 Super Wasp at age 16 in 1955 and I am on my 5th Hudson a 1953 Hornet and at 81 years of age, Power Steering would be God Sent. On the highway there is no problem but parallel parking is quite the chore!
FYI
I installed Electric power Steering assist like many new cars have today on my '51 Hudson. Its a small Motor Unit that can be rotated (hidden) behind the dash but requires cutting the column then re connecting with Couplers. There now are Online Video's of the Install and Companies that sell Universal Kits for around $1500, however, you still need someone to do the Installation. Its a little more complex on a Std but can be done. I did my own with a Hydromatic using a Unit from a Toyota for a lot less money,
It really works as nice as in my New car. If it should ever fail (doubtful) it simply reverts back to manual since its still coupled together
I can supply and install a 1954 Hornet LWB setup. I have already did one for Gary Hayes on his '51 Hornet, and will be doing one for Gary Evans on a 54 Hornet. I use new hoses. Ram and pump will be rebuilt by Lares. Please private message me for more info if interested.
Chuck ---Highly appreciate if you could post a pic or two of the electric unit installation? Thank you!
Thanks Chuck, I would be interested in your conversion with the Toyota parts and pictures of your installation if possible. Thanks again
I will get back to you later tonight.
Chuck
Hello, Could you PM me your Email so I could send the pictures & Info rather than re type here. Thanks, Chuck
FYI
Ive installed different type power steering set up's on all my Hudson's so I elected to install an Electric Unit on my 1951 Hudson. I have little less than $300 in it not counting my labor and it works Great!. Actually it was the simplest conversion ive done requiring hardly no Brackets, no Pump, No hoses, No Belts, and no Dbl pulley. If it ever fails, it simply reverts back to manual. It can be rotated behind the dash or put down near the floor. It does require 12Volt system, cutting a short section out of the steering column, and Its easier installed with an automatic, but can be done on a Standard. If those factors don't bother you, email me for more detail. cv.cars@verizon.net
Chuck ---I sent you my email. Thanks again
Chuck, just to let you know, I have ordered the 2010 Prius Steering column with connectors on both ends and the controller module. Should be here in about a week. I would love to complete this project in time to make the trip to Prescott AZ. for the Western Regional's the middle of next month.
William ---See you there! Bring it!!
Gonna give it our best try!
