Hello forum friends.
I had to remove the cylinder head on my '36 splasher 6 to fix a sticking intake valve, now the head gasket needs to be replaced . I solicit tips on replacement, including,
what brand of gasket should I use or does it matter? I see that BEST is out of stock according to their website, so I'll have to look elsewhere.
What's a source for new head bolts, and what should I use to put on the threads to prevent coolant leakage?
Some of you use copper spray on the head gasket, what brand do you use?
Should I soak the gasket in water before installation?
Should I have the head milled prior to installation (cast iron, not aluminum)?
Do I use washers under the head bolt nuts?
Thanks for any advice out there!
John
John, get the gasket and installation info from Dale Cooper, in Ohio. 513-821-6200.
Silver paint is the best to use, just a good thick coat, and leave to dry, but not harden. No need to soak in water, this is just an old trick if you are re-using an old gasket. You don't need washers under the head nuts, if you use the original wide nuts. If the head was not troublesome before there is probably no need for it to be machined. You refer to bolts - these motors used studs into the block. Start at the centre and radiate outwards when you tighten the nuts, and do not exceed 40 lbs torque. Re-tighten again when the engine is hot. Good luck,
Geoff
Gentlemen, thank you very much for the comments. Question about silver paint - do I use something like Rustoleum or Krylon rattle can high heat silver spray?
Thanks!
John, Do not necessarily replace the head bolts. It is not usually necessary and they can be a bear to remove. Having said that, as Geoff says, be wary of overtightening them! When re-tightening, you can go up to 45 lbs., but DO NOT exceed this (make sure you have a good 'clicker' type torque wrench.) ( I broke one, so learned the hard way).
Sorry, STUDS, not bolts....
Yes, any good aluminium spray is fine. just do not spray too thick so it runs. apply one coat, allow it to touch dry and do another one. Let that dry, not harden, and then fit to block.
Worked for an old school mechanic years ago. He always used Copper Coat gasket sealer on every head he replaced. Don't know if is's still being made.
Indian Head Gasket Shellac Compound, I believe that is a copper base coating. Its made by Permatex I think
Gentlemen, thank you very much for the tips!
