Are the ignition switches for a 1934 and 1935 Terraplane the same ? If not, do they look the same when in the dash ?
Bill, If you mean the key switch on the dash master parts book shows the 34 & 35 G are the same
Thank you,
I have the 'Numerical Parts Interchangeability Record' book but really do not know how to find much in it. That is what I wanted to know if they are the same.
Thanks you again,
Bill
You need the master parts book to find the part number of a specific part.
You can then look in the interchange book to see what years / models its used on.
Sometimes it shows the "service part" which is generally a newer part from a new year that will work.
Tom,
I hate to ask this but I will. I have searched the Library and have found Terraplane Body Parts Book and others but have not located the reference book in your email. This library is extremely important to me as I have only worked on Ford ( sorry about that ) cars and my Terraplane is a whole new world to me.
Thank you again,
Bill
I can find no reference in the Master parts catalogue for the ignition switch, but to the best of my knowledge there is no difference between '34 and '35 switches, and any generic switch would do the job. Previous models hade an electrolock which was a theft-proof device, which grounded the ignition with the key removed. I believe original coils had the coil mounted in the bulkhead with the back of the coil in the car, and the primary wire connected to the back of the coil, and only one terminal on the protuding end going down to the distributor.
These are pictures I took & marked up when rewiring my 35 T.
The one labeled IGNITION KEY SWITCH is the one I'm guessing you need to replace.
Each terminal is marked. BAT, STA & IGN.
I think I've seen similar ones on eBay.
PS,
As Geoff indicated in his reply there is no clear callout in the master parts book for an ignition switch.
I assumed the pic I sent from the book for there IGNITION COIL LOCK CYLINDER was the switch in question.
When you turn the key to the ON position the coil is energized.
I bought my copy of the Master Chassis group Parts Book online.
Tom.
Thank you again. I just ordered the parts book you referenced. It may be a big help to me.
Happy New Year to you,
Bill
35 used a switch with a conduit attached going out through the firewall that attached to the end of the ignition coil. 32 thru 34 H&T used a switch that was built into the ignition coil that was attached to the back of the dash. 35 should be about the same till around 38(?)
Tom
I attached the original schematic from my Terraplane Special owners manual showing the key mounted in the coil.
I also attached the markup I made showing how my car was wired prior to starting the rewire on it.
Must be at some point in the cars life the original keyed coil was removed and the switch in the dash added.
At the time I rewired the car I assumed the schematic in the manual was incorrect as the wiring appeared to be original with the same age and look as other wires.
I guess another one of the mysteries of old cars.
Please excuse any confusion I've caused.
Might as well throw some more gas on the fire.
I just looked at the 35 owners manual for the Deluxe Models in the club library.
It shows the key switch separate from the coil as my car was / is wired.
Again I'm guessing but it could be the keyed coil died at some point and a separate switch and coil were used to replace it.
Never thought of looking at the wiring diagram! To add to the confusion, The Terraplane Special (the cheap model) shows the key in the back of the coil, and the Deluxe (more upmarket version) shows a separate keyswitch with the wire from that going to the back of the coil. Hey, nobody is going to poke their head under the dash to check - do whatever fits!
I can't help myself, just like digging into these things.
I attached a pic from there Master parts book showing the coils used between 34-35.
Three different flavors.
The line marked MY CAR is where my serial number falls.
I've attached sheets from the Auto-Lite catalogs of the period of each coil listed.
The last one, IG-4616, shows the coil and Auto-Lite Electrolock switch used on the 35 T GU & Deluxe models.
Could be my car left the factory with this setup event though the serial says it didn't.
OR as previously noted it was converted / serviced with this setup at some later point.
Did a little digging and apparently the same or similar three terminal switch was used on 29-32 Chevy trucks.
Found it on eBay for $5.89.
Correction, the Chevy switch is a four terminal but may be able to be used.
