The drain plug on this gas tank has a square inset which is not compatible with a 3/8" socket driver, the socket driver being too large. But 1/4" is too small.
Any ideas what can be used to remove this plug? I have three tanks that all have this same type inset plug.
The tool guys have special sockets for square plugs. They are 8 sided and used for gas tank drains, block drains for coolant, I bought three different sizes
From one of tool guys years ago. Mack Tools, Matco Tools, Snapon Tools, Craftsman Tools. They use to be very common and are probably still available.

Grind down the sides of an old 3/8" extension to fit.
I found one of my 4 sided punches was nearly the right size. Took very little grinding. Hope this helps. LHud
Nell, Snap-on tools makes what you need. I believe the Part# is PPM -411. It is an 11/32nd's, thus the reason 3/8th's is too big, .250 is too small. I hope this helps! The right tool makes the job.
Another note about this. Make sure you are prepared when doing this job. Always have enough drain pans with enough capacity to drain all the fuel in the event the plug breaks out of the tank. Have the exact right tool really does allow you to apply, steady, even torque when removing these plugs. Also, NEVER use anything that has electricity and/or capability of creating a spark around fuel tanks or when working on fuel related repairs!!!! A drop light is very dangerous around fuel.
