harmonic balancer removal

I have heavy oil leakage at the timing chain cover on my 53 Hornet. So I have to remove the dampener (harmonic balancer). The manual shows a 2 jaw tool number J-676 to pull it after removing the center bolt. Naturally, I don't have that tool. Several general articles about pulling a dampener advise against using a jaw type puller because it could damage the rubber material between the inner and outer parts of the dampener. So I'm kind of stuck. What have others used to successfully pull the dampener on a Hornet 308 engine?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

The puller should be behind the dampener, whole assembly comes out as one. Then separate the rubber and replace if needed. To re-install, I bought a standard dampener installer and had a threaded end made to fit the Hudson crankshaft. This tool then "pushes the assembly back on.

Kerry,
Thanks for your response, it gives me some encouragement that an ordinary 2-jaw puller will work. By the way, that's quite a setup you used to pull the dampener, looks good. When you say separate the dampener and replace the rubber if necessary, what have you used to replace the rubber? Does someone manufacture a rubber ring of the proper size and shape to replace the internal rubber? Hopefully, I won't need it but better safe than sorry.
Again, thanks for your help.
Ed.

Make sure you pull from the very back of the dampener. It you try to pull from the pulley flange up front - you most definitely WILL will break the pulley flange!

Ed, I think we have a few of these rubber pieces left in stock. Give Cole a call at 317-398-4163. We are attending the Central regional in Findlay, OH., and will be gone until Mon. next week.
