I recently stumbled into a Commodore-8 style oil bath air cleaner that I would like to install on my '51 Super 6. It is complete except for the bracket that holds it up on the driver's side of the engine. Does anyone have a good bracket or two for sale or good pictures and dimensions so I can make a couple?
Thank you,
Chris
This is an interesting request?. The more I have thought about this, I have seen the long oil bath air cleaners on 8 cyl. engines but not that style on a 6 cyl. engine, only the round donut style?. The 8 cyl. oil bath support bracket uses special double ended studs in the water jacket to secure it. It also mounts at an angle. I have seen the dry type for a 6 cyl. '48 -'50 that mounts across the engine and has a small bracket that mounts on the linkage bolted on the cyl. head. I have made a special bracket to use one this style on a later big 6, made it look like it belonged.
Maybe someone here knows what you need or has seen what you are looking for?.
Thank you for the information. I am sure that something like this has been done. For example, Edmunds had an aluminum 2x double-barrel carburetor (WDO/WGD) intake manifold for the Big 6 before the Twin-H came out (1951 Edmunds Twin Carb Set Up). If someone was going for severe-use air filtration at the time they could have strapped a pair of these air cleaners on, but they would have had to figure out a way to support them. I just want to set up one with my stock double-barrel intake manifold.
As Doug indicates this will require a custom bracket for the Big 6 because it doesn't have the water jacket studs to bolt to. In the meantime I made a new thumbscrew to hold it together out of 8" long 1/4"-20 float rod and a washered wingnut. Some cutting, grinding, and threading required.

Brace will be 1 1/2" wide x 1/8" thick strap for strength. Rise from cylinder head is roughly 2". Distance from head bolt that has throttle spring retainer is appropriately 5 1/2".
Propped up, it really makes the engine bay look good!

I just finished fabricating the brace based on the previously mentioned specifications. It attaches via cylinder head bolt and is clear of the throttle return spring. I will attempt to install this weekend. I assume it is a "wet" bolt so I will drain down the coolant first.

The approach with this brace configuration is a dead end. Unfortunately, the bolt location (cylinder head bolt that secures throttle return spring) selected is very problematic. If the brace is too low it interferes with the oil cap and the throttle return spring. The base of the air cleaner is not even; the middle is deeper than the outer regions. I suppose that a brace configuration closer to the original could attach to the forward mounting bolt of the oil filter.
I found a way to lighten the assembly by replacing the core with a paper air filter (NAPA 2011 / Wix 42011 / STP SA146).
Mounting from the oil filter assembly is possible, but positioning the air cleaner assembly toward the back of the engine bay will get it tangled up in my throttle linkage. Alternatively, I selected to make a brace that attaches to the coil bracket. This appears to be ideal. With the paper element substituting for the inner canister and oil, weight is definitely not an issue for the 1" wide by 1/8" thick strap I used to make the brace nor the coil bracket. I did grind down the side of the brace closest to the coil a few tenths because of the tight fit.

Good job, looks like it belongs!
Thanks
