I took the front grill badge out of it's mounting. It is faded and scratched. I have a jewelry buffer and I can take most of the scratches out if not all. However, I wander how to restore the colors on the back side. When I removed it I noticed that it had a gasket on the back and a metal plate covering it. The metal plate had a round hole that looked like a place for a light. Is that true? Did they light up? Where can I get the rubber gasket? Also how do I restore the colors of the front emblem?

Ther badge came in 3 color sets. There was black withchrome, black with gold and red with chrome. The colors are specific to year groups. The 2 black badges were used in early cars with the red ones beginning in 1951

However, restoration of all of them is about the same. With the only real difficulty is getting the chrome or gold areas to look right. This was originally plated from the reverse. Doing so is beyond my knowledge. I have seen badges where paint has been used with little success. The plating fills the 4 figures the letters and outlines the triangle
The center of the triangle is painted white from the back using your favorite method. This must remain thin as the light in the back shines through the white

The black or red is also painted from the back
Then, you mask out the triangle and spray everything (but the triangle) with silver paint. This is to keep the red or black from lighting up Only the white triangle allows light through.

Look at the links previously provided or google and you should find a good color example

If any one knows a good way to simulate the gold or chrome plating or a method to actually plate, hopelessly they will post it.
Yes the hole in the plate is for a lamp.

The reason we mentioned the reproduction availability is the plating. Both suppliers have the correct chrome plating and do the emblem very. Neither one provides the gold
There is a company called emblemagic who, for a price, can creat the gold ones to order

Hope this helps a bit
