What type of ATF should I use in my '54 Wasp Hydramatic?
Thanx!
Bruce,
Type "A". HA! Well you won't find any with that designation any more but it's been superceded so many times it's now what they call Dexron III or IV, or such. As understand it, all of the later formulations are "backward compatible" meaning the they will be correct for earlier versions.
I've been using it with apparent success for some time. If there is any better info on the subject, We'd both like to hear it.

Frank is right. my trusted transmission guy also recommends Dexron. For some reason, Mercon is different and not recommended..
I have been using Dexron in my hydramatic since the mid 80s with no problems at all Roger
Here's a list of transmission fluids and what they are used on. Notice Mercon is for most Ford products while Dexron is used in most GM products, which makes sense since GM built the hydramatics used in Hudson cars.
ATF+4 - Most Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler [8]
Mercon V - Most Ford, Mercury, Lincoln
Mercon LV - Some Ford(DuratecHE), MAZDA in Europe or Asia
Dexron VI - Most GM and pre-2004 Toyota products, some Ford applications
ATF DW-1 - All Honda and Acura (except CVT)
SP-III - All Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Kia (except CVT and dual clutch)
Matic S, Matic K, Matic D - Jatco transmissions, used in Nissan and Subaru vehicles
Toyota ATF-WS - All 2004 and later Toyota including hybrids
Honda DW ( ZF ) - All Honda Automatic (except CVT)

Don't fool around, use Dexron 111 or 4, Been in my car now for 142,000 miles. Change every 15,000 miles, and trans shift with no feeling. Walt.
