Is there a place in the literature that would help me with what would be the "correct" vin # on my car? I'm in the midst of a slow, but thorough restoration of a 1950 Commodore 4-door. The vin tag that is found in the correct location (inside the passenger door jam) looks to be original, but I am told it cannot be because of the number. It is clear that it starts with a 50A. I am not horribly concerned with the fact that the vin number is incorrect but am wondering what year of car it has been taken from. I have the title and the title work is already finished with the vin # that is on the tag although evidently it has been changed at some point.
I have spent enough time dealing with local DOT on acquiring titles and changes on other cars and so I'm going to leave this one the way it is--a bit of an orphan with some unknown history. Who knows, maybe a one-time stolen car with bank robbing, get-away car status.
Thanks for an help in advance.
...and since mine is the eight cylinder, should not the # start with 504?
50A is from a 1950 Pacemaker, Yes, 504 should be the prefix for your car if it is a Commodore.
Yes, a 50 C8 should start with 504xxxxx , There should be a serial/VIN # stamped on the right side front frame rail between the cowl and the suspension mounting point. It may have mis-stamped ?
Thanks for your expertise, Guys. I'll look for the number on the frame...k
