I have seen where the hudsons had ignition lock key that also did the doors. With also a seperate key that did the trunk and the glove box. Does this apply for the 1951 Hudson hornet? Or am I looking at this wrong?
Bernie, in my experience with many Hudsons from '36 through '51 I've not encountered one that had one key for everything. A shop could likely change the locks to be all the same, but the factory didn't. Standard setup was one for ignition and doors and the other for trunk and glove box.
If the locks are different, and I suspect they are, would they use the same key blank and just cut them different? Also would there be a key cut number? I worked for a locksmith and did a lot of cutting on newer cars but not the older ones. I did find that there is a broken key still in the trunk which I am having a hard time removing. I will have to remove the lock to extract the broken key, to small to get a good grip on it.
The keys are cut form the same blank. My Jet has one key for the ignition and doors, and a separate one for the trunk.
I found that the trunk key had been broken off in the cylinder but all my efforts to remove it from the lock failed. I will have to disassemble the trunk latch decorative housing to get it out. When you work on your car you sure learn a lot more about it. Is there a cut number for those keys?
On my 51 Commodore there is a small plastic oin under the chrome trunk handle. Pull the pin out and with a small Allen wrench you can remove the trunk lock from the outside. And then use a long narrow screwdriver to release the trunk latch. No need to go through the back seat or remove the chrome handle.
Take the lock to a locksmith and he can remove the broken key and make a new one.
I got both the trunk log and glove box looks out of the car. The only number I can find is the number on the glove box lock H711. I have yet to find any number on the trunk lock. Wow! It only take a couple of seconds to get the lock out when you know what to do. I didn't and it took me an hour at least.
Trunk locks often have one more tumbler than the glove box locks so the key may have to be made from the trunk lock in order to work for both.
H 711 is the key code for your trunk. If you can find an old lock shop, all you have to do is tell him the code and he can make you a key. It will fit the glove box and trunk. Bring your glove lock.
The original trunk key blank had an octagonal head while the ignition was round. (the opposite of GM) The trunk blank is getting harder to find but the ignition blank can be used. A Briggs & Stratten Master key blank works too but has a smaller round head.
The code for the ignition is on the cylinder.
if you call Doug Wildrick he can make that key from the number of H 711, he has blankes and the machine@ 317-398-4163
Thanks Ron,Yes we can. We have a master Hudson key-code book and make keys all the time. Cole has made many Hudson keys for folks. I purchased the books, key blanks, key cutters and about everything you would need to service and make Hudson keys from Norm Burgdorf several years ago, where it was used at a large Hudson agency, Burgdorf Hudson sales and service, St.Louis, MO.. We have been able to save many locks with this equipment. Thanks again Norm!!
I finally got the cylinders out and found the little bity numbers on the locks. They are really hard to see. Thanks everyone for all the help, I am learning so much about my Hudson from everyone. It's the little things that you have almost forgot that helps us newbies the most. Thanks again.
