Can anyone tell me what a blinking Amp light means while the engine is running. Is it not charging? Thanks.
Is it just blinking at idle or while driving along? If it’s just at idle and goes out when you increase the speed of the engine it’s ok.
Generators don’t always charge at idle.
Could mean that the wire from the A light to the generator is shorting our somewhere. Or it could indicate trouble with the generator or regulator, depending on which model you have.
Thanks. It is blinking at idle. I will do some more looking to check. Thanks for the input.
Yes if it is only on or blinking at idle your ok. My 39 does that. When I increase rpms the lights goes out. As stated generator's don't always charge at idle
My '51 blinks at idle with the original 6 volt generator. This is because it is not charging at the lower RPM. If you drive it or set the idle higher and the light turns off this is likely what is occurring. It is my understanding that this is fairly typical of cars with generators.
Jason,
As Ed, Victor, and Christopher all said, it is OK. Your engine has a nice slow idle! In the old days, when I was desperate to keep my battery charged in the winter, I turned up the idling so the generator would always be charging. This wasn't so good for gas mileage, but at least the car would start in the morning!

Thank you all. This is reassuring. Sounds like the generator is working as it should.
Jason, if you have a battery charger hooked up to the battery while the engine is running, can sometimes cause the amp light to flash. Also make sure the battery charger is set on 6 volts, not 12 volts, this too can cause the amp light to flash.
Remember too that just because the light has gone out does not indicate that the battery is being charged properly. A fast idle will only put about 1 or 2 amps in, not enough to make any difference. The regulator has to be set at 7.25 volts with the engine hot and the headlamps on for the generator to do it's job properly.
