I've been trying to take the slop out of my shift lever but can't seem to get the sequence right. When driving the car, when I put it in 2nd gear, the transmission shifts to second gear but the shift lever falls down to the 3rd gear position....but the car stays in 2nd. I've found 2 set screws on the left side of the column and one under the shift tube. One of the 2 on the left is stripped and can't be loosened so I may have to drill it out but the other 2 loosen up fine. I've looked in the manual and can't for the life of me figure out how to resolve this problem. I did move the gear shift handle to neutral and tightened the left set screw but then it wouldn't shift through neutral and it wouldn't go into reverse. I've lubed the heck out of the sliding rod inside the column and tried moving the cable adjustment at the firewall but nothing makes any difference. I think the key is to get the set screws properly set for neutral and go from there but that's just an uneducated guess on my part. Any suggestions? Terry

Terry, Might possibly be the splines on either your shifter shaft or the shifter fulcrum. Might be both. It dosen't matter about the set screw. The splines have to be in good shape. (a big problem if you get the shifter shaft replated) Check this out and see.

When I remove the shift lever, I can see the spines with a flashlight but I haven't been able to remove the shift lever base off the splines....possibly because of the set screw that is stripped won't slip past that portion of the spline. I'll keep digging but it looks like Ill be disassembling the column. I'm hoping you have parts for this just in case. Terry
