After searching through the Service and Parts books I bought from the store, and after searching the forums, I haven't found any image or description of the method of how the lower stainless trim is held to the car. I am planning to remove both the wide and narrrow pieces to complete some paint work.

Can anyone provide an example or insights as to successful removal and reinstallation?
Do these attach only with the very special shaped, Hudson specific strips?
Is inner rocker panel access required in order to remove without damage to the trim?

THanks everyone,
Pat

Most of the stepdown trim, such as the linear trim that passes about mid-door level, is snapped onto a flat steel retainer held on to the body with small phillips head sheet metal screws. The steel retainers can rust over time locking the beautiful trim to them. If you force the stainless trim off and thereby bend a piece you will regret it, so take your time. Put a couple of layers of tape above/below trim to protect paint. Use a wide flat spackle knife, preferably plastic, against tape as final paint protector. There are varying methods for popping off trim. Some use another wide spackle knife over the other to hook under edge and pop off trim. I found a vinyl siding tool can truly hook under trim and pull away and up from retainer. Malco SRT2 is one example of such a tool. The hook end can be slipped under trim and hook on trim edge, helping break seal from retainer.
