Does anyone know how wide the whitewall portion of the tire was if ordered on a new Hudson in 1951? I assume there were options on the width, but was there a standard from the factory? Terry
Terry, On bias ply tires you could get up to about 4 inches of whitewall not many people bought them. Most cars of the day had blackwalls due to the higher price of whitewalls. Today even restored trucks have whitewalls. Something unheard of back in the day. On a steel belted tire they don't quite get that wide due to the steel belts entering onto the wall area of the tire.. Coker makes very nice wide wall tires that look like donuts. Diamondback has very nice whitewalls but they are steel belted radials not quite as wide
I talked to the Diamondback people and was told the bias ply radial look alike wont be in stock until late fall or early winter ( Auburn Deluxe) which was my first choice. They are made in Taiwan. They have the Auburn Premium in stock for about the same price as the Deluxe, with various widths in whitewall construction. I have a set of Coker ww on my '54 Cadillac with 3" whites and they look appropriate for that car, which is much larger the our Hudsons. I did have to send one back because of a bulge in the white portion of the tire, but I've put 12K miles on them with no further problems. I'm still leaning towards the Delux, in a 2 3/4 white, but will have to wait for delivery. Everything takes time, especially in the old car world. Terry
