We recently had a unusually occurrence. We were checking the weight on a set of connecting rods removed from an engine. The numbers on 2 of the rods were 302609 and 303906 on the other 4 . I have a picture of them all laying together, but don't know how to post pics. The weight on the 2 different numbers was enough to have caused a problem and can't figure how it wasn't a problem before now?. I still would like to know why the numbers were transposed ?. The parts book says to only replace in matched sets, which is a given., and shows part# 303906. These rods had a different appearance too. The 4 that matched numbers have a wider beam and larger piston pin boss, and the other 2 had a narrower beam, but were cast much smoother and cleaner, with a different manufacturer casting signature?. Both numbers are the style with NO oil hole to the piston pin. That style was'48-9 and changed sometime in '50 to the style with a chamfered oil hole at the top The Numbers on items like the crankshafts are 1 digit off from the parts book?. I expect this has been discussed before, but I just don't remember. Any insight on this would be great, been driving me crazier than I already am!! Thanks
According to the parts book, Forging No. 305906 was introduced in mid 1950. Perhaps you are mis-reading the number? The note in the manual says they are interchangeable only as complete sets. So there is obviously a difference in weight as you have noted. I share your intrigue!
Yes Geoff, I saw that, which confused me even more?. The numbers are correct, and if I knew how to post the pics I would. I even highlighted them. You can also see the difference in the shape of the rods, just a mystery ?. Maybe I can get Cole to post them for me.
perhaps a shade tree mechanic had been in that engine at some point?
Side note: Thanks for the input on the turn signals Doug. I haven't had a chance to take a look at it yet.
HOW TO POST PICTURES --
Start a new topic.
1) if the photos already on the internet somewhere, click the IMAGE LINE icon which is just below that red "X" on the "topic icon" line. Then the words IMAGE LINK: URL OF THE IMAGE LINK appear, just under that nauseating row of smiley faces. ABOVE the row of smileys, appears the word URL and next to it "http://" --- This is where you will copy and past the URL of the photos that you want to include in your message. (If you don't know how to find the URL's, let me know!)
2) If the photos are on YOUR COMPUTER, then click ADD FILE in the ATTACHMENTS area. A box opens up with the file arrangement of your computer. Start riffling around from folder to folder until you locate the photo files you want to post, and click on one. Then click the OPEN button in the little window.
One by one, these photos you've selected, will be listed (by name) in the ATTACHMENTS area of the screen. When you're done, click INSERT next to each photo, once. Or click REMOVE FILE if you goofed.
Then you're ready to post your message with its photos. Click SUBMIT! You're done!
Well, I just saw this!! teach me to fall asleep around you guys! I believe that was San Mateo?. Another great International HET meet!
Thanks for the instructions John. I'll see if I can make that happen.
