Hello Terraplaners,
I am looking for headlight rims for my '37, using sealed beam lights. After going to swap meets, etc, I am mostly sure that the rims were manufactured by BLC. If I knew the model number of the buckets, which I think, are also BLC, it would go a long way towards helping me find the correct BLC rims. So, question, does any one know the BLC part number, e.g., 682 or similar, of the '37 headlight buckets? Or am I way out in left field somewhere?
P.S. I'd be delighted to replace the sealed beams with the original lens and reflectors, but I'm not to that point in restoration yet.
Is BLC a company that made aftermarket headlight conversion parts? I've never heard of them.
I assume that several companies offered the aftermarket conversion kits. I'd advise you to watch Ebay, you sometimes see a N.O.S. conversion kit offered there. In fact, there's one there right now: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1936-37-Plymouth-Dodge-Desoto-Hudson-Nash-sealed-beam-headlight-adapter-kit/222847445007?hash=item33e2be280f:g:p1wAAOSwNmVai2t4&vxp=mtr With luck you'll find a "BLC" so that the rim will match your set-up. Otherwise, just buy a different brand and replace your present conversion kit.
Donald Axelrod, in Massachusetts, sells complete headlights for antique cars. You might want to see if he has a set for your car, even though you hadn't considered going back to original yet. That's because -- if his lights are in the same range as the replacement rims for your conversion kit, you might want to just go ahead and get the "real deal". Nowadays you can buy halogen bulbs for 6-volt systems, which fit the old style headlight sockets, so your headlights can be authentic AND bright.
Jon, BLC was origionally called Brown Lipe Chapin making lighting parts much as C.M. Hall did for Hudson.. It was later bought out by GM and incorporated into the Guide lighting division.
Gentlemen, thank you both very much. I'll follow up on the leads. Meanwhile, I did see BLC rims on some other 37 headlight buckets at the swap meet, so I am thinking that the BLC rims were OE. The buckets were $100 for the pair, which of course I should have got, but I was dumb. Moral: if you pass on something like that, you'll regret it later.
