I should be getting a lot of parts in in the next day or so . So I started to read through the procedure manual . It shows a special tool to remove the rear drums ?! I expect the slide hammer to pull rear axles , but a brake drum puller .
Sooo I guess the question is what do you guys use to get these drums off ? I assume the special Hudson tool is rarer than lips on a bird and people have come up with work arounds .
Thank you
Also once off is there a best found method to put them back on or just run it on using the castle but and an impact ?
Oh I tried to search the forum and didn’t see anything .
The best tool is the original type, a puller that anchors to three of the lug bolt holes then put pressure on the axle shaft with a threaded rod. A dogbone extension off the threaded shaft allows for striking with a mallet- do nOT strike axle directly. Installation is as easy as placing drum back on tapered axle, and reinstalling nut to proper torque. No need for air hammer to install. Make sue key is properly in groove or you can warp drum cone-shaped hub.

Paul Largetype has graciously put together an illustrated guide to how to go about rear brake drum removal. https://www.hetclub.org/index.php?option=com_simgallery&view=album&aid=26&Itemid=656 This is a universal tool, and you may even find that it's available for rent at older tool rental places. They can be found anywhere, new or used, for anywhere from $25 to over $100, and if you intend to hold onto your car you'd be well-advised to purchase one.
Do NOT, under any circumstance, be bamboozled by an old-time mechanic who suggests whaling on the end of the axle with a sledge hammer, to loosen the brake drum. This will destroy the inside of the differential.
Mike let me know if you want a drum puller.
Found a used OTC puller for $65 and bought it last night .
Just remember when using it it may take quite a few wacks with the hammer on the dog bone. Don't quit. When you least expect it there will be a PING and like magic the drum is free!
More of a bang. My first drum made so much racket when it released, I wore ear plugs when I pulled the second drum. I didn't need a hammer on the dog bone, just persistant pressure. Make the job easier by lubing the puller and shaft-drum interface
And of course leave nut on loosely so when drum pops it won't go flying
adjust the brakes so there is no drag on the drum first
