Door panel trim clips

1954 Hudson Hornet 4d

So, I've ripped the cardboard backer in a few places pulling off the door panels. That got me wondering if I could substitute plastic clips for the metal ones I've broken?

I'm kinda guessing it's a no. The plastic ones I've seen don't look like they would line up in the correct place and don't look like they would slide right in.

But I'm going to need a lot. I'd like to replace all of them even if I didn't break them. That's at least 15 per door.

I think Restoration Supply Co. has them, they advertise in Hemmings Motor News. Upholstery supply co’s. Have them,

Nathan,

Take a look here. Auveco has been around for decades, the used to carry a full line of metal clips but they are limited in what they carry now.

Bought some from a VW dealer, as they have metal ones for a older VW bug that work for Hudsons.

After scouring parts of the dark web I believe I have located some replacements at O'Reilly.

There are a few like this already in my car. So hopefully this will work.

The problem I've found with the metal clips I've been able to locate, is that they are not long enough. This pic shows the Hudson clip on the right, and the (Ford/Mopar/VW) style on the left. It's well over 1/4" shorter, and won't work on my '49 Hudson. I suspect one should just bite the bullet and convert to plastic ones, along with re-location of mounting holes.

BK 6652322 at Napa is what I used on my 53 to retain door cards. Worked well. Door card had square holes, and door round holes. These were like direct replacements.

Okay, so maybe I'm talking apples and oranges here. My pic at top with the longer clip is actually of my interior 1/4 panel trim board next to the back seat. So maybe those are the only spots that require this longer clip. Perhaps the shorter clips are fine for the doors. (I've only recently done the 1/4 panel, haven't done the doors)

It may be that the above clips were installed in my car during restoration in the 70s, and not original for a 53, but they were perfect for holding door cards on

Those don't look at all like the VW ones.

Auveco part # Av12134, available at body/paint supply stores. Used them on my 1951 Pacemaker coupe and they worked fine on the door panels.
