ok dimmer is in. the very last connection is at the base of the steering column and connects to a linkage to the tranny. it has 2 bullet and 2 spade connections, cant find what this is. not sure if is overdrive but if thats the case we have an issue because i dont see the solenoid anywhere. looks like i dont have overdrive. tag on the tranny says H52-22599. hydramatic tag on the door for the model is 7307382 does this mach to a 54?

That sounds like a neutral safety switch? If you have a stick, they put the back up light there also?.

I didn't even think about that Doug didn't realize that was one of the options back then learning something new everyday seems like Hudson was ahead of its time in almost every aspect looking at the location that would make sense and after doing some research I realize that I do in fact have a 54 however not a hundred percent sure on the transmission it is a hydromatic and the serial number starts with H 5 2 that being said it does not look like the double lever Transmission in the manual but kind of looks like a single lever with an additional ever on the same output I'll attach some pics that being said I can't find anywhere in any manual from 48 through 54 that shows what that switch connects to that's the issue I guess it could be possible that Hudson through a 52 tranny in my 54 but can't seem to find anything showing how to tell what year the tranny is other than single lever and double lever other than that I guess the next question is if they put a 52 in my 54 what other parts could they have done the same thing too which would leave me to getting the wrong part and not knowing until I already got it shipped up here plus do I or do I not have an Overdrive

Single and 2 lever transmissions are standard 3 speed manual. The hydramatic is a 4 speed automatic. They did not have an overdrive on the automatic, unlike many modern transmissions. I would guess that sometime in the last 65 years the trans has most likely been changed. If you have a transmission expert working on your Hydramatic, make sure you buy parts based on the number on the tag. Many changes were made to the Hydramatics from 51 through 54.

Yes, this is a hydramatic. As Ric has pointed out, there were no auto trans with o/dr's This is a 4 speed automatic. The 3/8th's rod is the shift lever and small, 1/4" rod is the kick-down/throttle pressure rod. The neutral safety switch you show, as you have found, there are 2 different sets of terminals. One set is the starting circuit and the other is for back-up lights. When you select reverse, and the switch is adjusted correctly, it should make the 2 push-on connector post connect/continuity. The 2 center post with the screws are the actual safety portion of the switch and you MUST make sure you wire your energize/start position through this. If you don't, the car will start in any gear, thus being very unsafe! The neutral safety is what ever modern car gets. The 5/16th's head bolt is where you adjust it as needed to make it have continuity ONLY when in neutral. Make sure you test this once you are ready or test it with a meter, verifying it only works with the gear shift selector in "N" . Final test by putting it in any other position on the quadrant, try to start the engine. If it allows the engine to crank, it is NOT adjusted correctly. There is a Hydramatic supplement manual you should acquire. These are not hard to find. Hope this helps, keep up the good work and progress pics!!
