Would a straight exhaust pipe without a muffler work on a 308 straight L engine? ( car is a 1952 hornet)

I have done it but it is LOUD. I added a Cherry Bomb type muffler after that and it sounded great. Ran fine either way.

I had a crazy thought of a short pipe from engine to behind front passenger side wheel. Cheap and crazily different.

Like Don said you can do it but what's the point of getting a moving violation? BTW if your car is still required to get a state inspection, they may not pass it.

Can't we think of a constructive idea to think and talk about. Straight pipes are "kids" ideas! ! !

Of course it would work, but what do you want to achieve? "Hey, look at me making lots of noise"! It would sound terrible, and would not enhance your standing with the neighbours.

Now we are getting some discussion that I enjoy on my question.

Fact: I rode in a 1953 4 door hornet with a open flow glass pack muffler on it last week. It was loud from behind the rear of the car. This hornet is enhanced with performance parts. Now, I was thinking why put on a muffler at all. ..

A car is that loud with glass pack and it adds some performance versus putting on a restrictive muffler without the performance.

Plus, if starting from scratch which I will be doing if I purchase a car I have my eye on for restoration; why spend the money for muffler, at all.

I should just put on the straight pipe out the back (or out the side for less cost in pipe).

My opinion, classic cars are better LOUD.

The engine in the picture is currently in the 1953 green hornet that I rode in last week; it will be going into a 1952 blue hornet, (pictured). The blue car is what I have my eye on for future purchase and restoration.

God Bless,
Ryan

Ryan,

Almost sounds like trolling...
(Now we are getting some discussion that I enjoy on my question.)

If you like loud exhaust, go for it, but try to remember that you share the world with a lot of other people...

I Love old cars, even those that are a little loud from a bad or missing muffler.
I don't have so much patience with the motorcycle crowd that thinks/BELIEVES? that everyone else enjoys them showing off by revving the engine every chance they get
Why irritate the majority? Why make the general public think all old car people want to do is make a lot of noise so they will be noticed?

Back in the day, and still, they make exhaust cutouts so you can be respectful of the new mothers with sleeping babies, the veterans who are taking a nap, and the working people who are trying to conduct business while you are doing your thing in town, and then when you are out in the country, you can open it up and listen to all your noise, alone.

Rob

I have a dual outlet adapter on my 262 and a pair of cherry bombs at the back. Not LOUD but gets smiles from the neighbors and others while stopped at a traffic light. Then they can ask me, if it's a Twin H.. .? Now I can say "YES". Cool but not annoying. I doubt there is any discernable difference in a 308 and 262 exhaust note.
