Wire hubcaps, how do they mount?

I've got a set of wire hubcaps with two different styles of mounting caps. In the first picture, this mount has recessions where the lug bolts go. In the second picture, there are no recessions. And the second one is really chewed up, it looks like someone ripped the caps off the wheel instead of pulling the lugs off (and I have two that look like this).

The trouble is, the caps won't line up correctly with the lugs and the valve stem. There are slots on the mounts that allow the caps to spin a little in each direction, but not enough to line up correctly. What am I missing and which mount is correct (recession or no recession)? And lastly, does anyone have any spare mounts laying around they'd be willing to part with (I'm not sure I can straighten out the warped ones enough to get them to work)?

Thanks.
