Am trying to take apart a 35 terraplane delux door to replace the window and vent glass....as well as repair mechanisms.
Have the handles removed and the panel but don't know what to do next or the process of disassembly. Window is stuck in up position.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I had hoped someone would have offered advice now, so I'll go ahead and give a suggestion or two.
My '37 is an open car so the window removal is through the top, but possibly the glass comes out through the door itself, in the closed cars.
So, here's my best shot. With any luck someone will jump in here and give you the RIGHT answer, LOL!
First, remove the upholstered door panel to reveal the interior of the door.
Then, I think you roll the window down about halfway so that the scissors mechanism is fully visible. At that point, I believe you will want to remove the entire scissors mechanism from the door, so that you can slide the window all the way down, which (with any luck!) will allow it to be removed from its track.
I believe that a couple screws fasten the scissors mechanism to the bottom of the steel channel that holds the glass. Once you remove the screws you can maybe raise the glass window and secure it in an "up" position to get it out of the way, using rope or string. (Don't let it come down like a guillotine!).
The scissors mechanism is welded to some steel cross-members which are, in turn, bolted to the door at the left and right sides (and maybe the top and bottom). Once these cross-members are unbolted, you can simply remove the mechanism. (Be sure to check it for broken teeth, and also lube it so it runs smoothly, after you have removed it.)
Now, as I say, you should be able to drop the window (in its steel channel) down, and free it from the vertical channels that hold it.
Anyway, that's my best guess. Now someone can give you the REAL information!
Thank you for your suggestions....they got me started on the right approach. I worked first on removing the mechanism and disconnecting it from track. I was then able to lower the window which had been stuck. There were four screws ( 2 horizontal and 2 vertical) that held the track to the metal support piece that moved up and down with the window. The metal support piece stayed in a track that was also connected or part of the vent window assembly.
Once disconnected I was able to remove the window from the top by raising it and tilting the front part forward and down and pulling it inward and up.
Thanks again.
Keith
