Hello all,

I am in need of a pair of inner axle seals for my stock 1949 Hudson super six. I know the original National seal was a 5811 and hard to find. Anyone know of an interchange number? CR, skf, timken? Have the fronts and outer rear already.

thanks in advance!

Dale Cooper has them for $20 apiece. http://www.hudsonmotorcarco.com/ You might be able to find some NOS ones cheaper, though when it comes to rubber parts it's always preferable to find something brand new, I think!

The original were leather, stay away from them as they can not take today's grease. New ones are made of rubber. Walt.

Found the solution...

NOS ones are becoming very hard to find evidently as Dale Cooper doesn't have anymore on stock himself and wasn't sure where or when he would come up with some more. I matched up the inner ID of the axle housing and OD of the axle at a local NAPA store and they came up with a SKF #13906 seal. Problem was it was way too wide at .250 for a width and wouldn't allow the race to seat back in the housing. All you have to do is secure it in a vice and proceed to cut the seal in half along the width and dress it up all while being careful not to damage the rubber seal itself. This seal has two outer walls and the one you want has the rubber seal pressed inside it. Then you can set it in recessed toward the center of the car just like the original leather 5811 and have the room for the race. No problem! Easy to get at any parts store you just have to do a little work.

Do you mean that the seal after cutting needs to be .250"wide to fit the housing and it started out .500" wide?
Any pic of the job?
Thanks

Paul,

I believe that is right it started at .500 and ended up at roughly .250 or half the original width. I used a small cut off wheel to do the work being carefull to always use the wheel where you keep the flow of sparks away from the rubber seal. I used a rough then fine fit to bring the edges true and smooth. I don't believe I have a picture of the work when I did this. I will look, but it is one of my regrets that I havent taken more like this where I improvised. I will tell you I have nearly 2,000 miles on the car since replacing the seal and no problems.

I will also say at first I was concerned that I possibly would hamper the ability of the seal to seal and stay firm in the I.d. of the axle. After seating the seal I was impressed with how well it wentin andfelt firm. Once the axle is put in the housing the races will keep the seal from moving.

Andy, and everybody else having this problem with seals. Here is the interchange list on National 5811: CR 13910, 13902,13908 ,500991,275G112, 275GL112. McCord 84163. Mopar T1232, MB166508. Victor 49217. Koyo 35X46X8MHSA. Some CR prefix stuff may have to have an SKF prefix depending on how the parts houses want to do this. Chicago Rawhide seals was bought out by SKF about 10 years ago but the prefix CR is still sometimes used instead of the newer SKF prefix. No sense in re-inventing the wheel until all possibilities are exhausted.

Will have to keep those numbers in mind for next time. I figured since napa's database couldn't cross reference the number, it wasn't available. I am sure hudson wasn't the only manufacturer to use that seal in some application.

Thanks,

Andy

Dave Kostansek has both inner and outer seals at $18.00 each. Details in WTN.
