While I was working on my 37 Hudson today... I can't believe it but I slipped and stuck the radiator with a small flat head screwdriver. She bleed out at the point of impact and I am wondering if I can solder this myself or will it have to go to a radiator shop? If someone has done a similar repair of s hole in the fin area please let me know how you did it. I appreciate the help!
Depends on how good you are at soldering. I tried to fix a small hole like that a few years ago and was successful in creating a profitable project for the radiator repair guy. Good luck.
While I've replumed 4 houses myself in new copper over the last 20 year, I haven't touched anything this delicate & small. Usually my biggest fear is catching framing on fire but this has more involved.
So while I am comfortable with sweating copper I think I will pass this down to the radiator shop. Plus, while its out I will just have the shop boil it out & give it a good once over since the only history I know is that I've let it sit for 12 years idle until the last few weeks. Hopefully eliminating one more issue once I get her running & driving.
I like your reasoning .... 🙂
Brian,
I have had very good results with epoxy. Two years ago I removed the radiator from my 1935 Hudson, because it was leaking at the junction between the core and the lower tank. After cleaning the area very thoroughly (removing all traces of antifreeze, carefully scraping corrosion off, and having it absolutely dry), I applied the epoxy. It has been working fine. On the same car, in 1967 I used epoxy to plug a small hole in the side plate. That repair is also still working!

I always like to do things myself because I tend to do a better job than others. However I thought I'd give the local radiator shop a try since I also wanted to boil it out and have the pressure checked just to be sure. As it turns out they did a pretty crappy job. I ended up having to take the radiator back right after I got it home. Well they did redo it I'm not sure if they did a good job or not, I will really only know once I reinstall it and try it out.
I will attach a couple photos of what I got the 1st time around.
