Hello,
I have just joined the HET club and I have just purchased a 1953 Hornet hydramatic. The car had previously been converted to 12v, but the starter motor was not converted. Having heard some horror stories of smashed bendix, pinion gears and casings I decided to remove the starter and check. Sure enough the pinion gear is damaged. I am currently trying to find someone who can rewind the starter motor for 12v. As I live in the UK I could not source a set of 12v field coils locally.

As an alternative, does anyone know of a modern 12v pre engaged starter motor that will fit.

Many thanks for your advice,
Best Regards, Brian.

A years or two ago on the Classiccar.com Hudson forum, someone posted about commercially available windings to convert a Stepdown starter motor from 6 volt to 12 volts. I had a light search of the site but you'll need someone more computer literate than me to find the thread. Try posting your request directly on the classiccar.com Hudson forum.

Walt here; Just take the starter to any good electrical shop and all they have to do is change to field coils. That's the only difference from 6 to 12. Hudson starters are Auto-lite, same as Chrysler and the 12 volt coils interchange. Must have new bushings, brushes and bendix.

Thanks for the replies. As I live in the UK, the 12v windings, bendix etc are not readily available. If anyone knows of a direct source that I could contact in the US, that would be helpful.
I will follow your suggestion to try the Classiccar.com forum as well.

Many thanks,
best Regards,
Brian.

Surely, you must have an electric company that can help you there. Walt.

Can anyone recommend someone who can ship the correct 12v field coils for the starter to the UK please? Or does anyone have a 12v starter that they are prepared to sell and ship to the UK. I am having no luck here at all. I have telephoned multiple places and no one can help. I eventually found one electrical shop (2 hours drive away) willing to take a look. They have tried reconnecting the field coils from parallel to series, but that did not work. If they need to rewind the field coils then they are worried about the cost, because they would need to make a jig for the windings etc etc.

Incidentally, I have tried to register with the classiccar.com site - but my account has not been activated and they have not responded to my 3 emails !

Many thanks for any help that can be provided.
Regards, Brian.

Brian:

As regards your problem with Classiccar, go to this page http://www.classiccar.com/contact/ and contact them, explaining your problem. I have found them to be very helpful and eager to help. The Classiccar Hudson forum, while not run by the Club, is well patronized and is very useful to use in conjunction with this one.

I have a shop I used to rebuild my starter they did a great job on the motor. I would be willing to help you out but I can't imagine the cost of the parts and shipping. Have you searched ebay?

Hello Steve, thank you very much for the kind offer, it is really appreciated. At the moment I am making some progress, so let me see how that progresses first. I have located some field windings from the US and I am having them shipped to the UK. I am also following another course of action in parallel, I have found a company in the US that builds mini Denso starters for many different applications. They have obtained an original Hudson starter for a 53 Hydramatic and are using this as a model to build a new starter. I did look at a thread on another forum, for cutting up and modifying a Chrysler mini starter, however they are only really available as a new purchase here in the UK (i.e. not cheap), so when I found the company that could build a new Denso starter, I stopped that line of investigation. I will post the results on here as things develop. If this all comes to nothing then I may indeed need more help!
Again many thanks for the offer of help
